Sidoli appointment :: 29 Apr 18:49
Robert Sidoli announced as new Pontypridd forwards coach
Former Pontypridd player Robert Sidoli has returned to the club where he first made his name, confirmed as successor to Geraint Lewis as forwards coach.
Sidoli has been acting in the role since it was vacated by Lewis, who took up a full time post as skills coach with the WRU at the turn of the new year.
Merthyr product Sidoli joined up with Pontypridd from his hometown club in 1998 and went on to make 96 appearances for the Valley Commandos to the end of the professional club era in 2003, and in the meantime won 42 caps for Wales.
Sidoli then went on to represent the Celtic Warriors, Blues and Dragons at regional level.
Now aged 35, the hugely experienced lock has stood down from playing at professional level with the Dragons, his rugby career about to turn full circle with a return to Pontypridd.
Having gained experience as a coach with the Dragons under 18s squad and attained his level three WRU accreditation, Sidoli now steps up to be forwards coach with Pontypridd.
“It is a special honour to be asked back to Pontypridd” said Sidoli of his appointment.
“As a player, my first big step in progressing from Merthyr was to Ponty, and after a long involvement with the club it came to be a home from home. To be asked back in a coaching capacity is a huge privilege for me.
“I look forward to continuing the good work that Geraint started, working alongside the other coaches and with a quality squad of players.
“This will be a good way for me to continue my involvement in the game. I’m glad that it came about this way and look forward to the opportunities and the challenges ahead. To be back at a club that has been so successful, and enjoys such phenomenal support, is an honour.”
