Unique Grogg for Brains SA Captains Climb :: 11 May 09:15

Standing just two inches tall, these figures of 15 former Wales rugby captains pushing each other up a mountainside are the smallest Groggs ever made.

Painstakingly carved by Grogg-maker Richard Hughes, the handmade model commemorates the forthcoming Brains SA Captains Climb of Mount Kilimanjaro.

It is hoped that the one of a kind Grogg will be auctioned off as part of the £1m challenge to raise money for Lung Cancer Research and awareness.

The model, which is still two months away from completion, features 15 of the former Wales rugby captains along with replacement Garin Jenkins climbing the African volcano.

The figure on the top is Welsh rugby photographer Huw Evans, held up by Bob Norster. Huw organised the climb after his wife Sue was diagnosed with non-smoking related Lung Cancer in 2008.

Mr Hughes who works from the Grogg Shop in Pontypridd said ’ Huw didn’t want to be on the model- when he first had the idea he wanted a ubiquitous figure of a rugby player on top.

’I thought about it for three months and when I saw the list of players taking part in the climb I knew something special needed recognising.

‘I had this idea of doing all the players going up the mountain, pushing each other up the hill and Huw on top being held up by Bob Norster.’

The team leave for Kilimanjaro on September the 6th and will be joined by Wales Team coach Warren Gatland in their attempt of the summit. The list of captains is, Gareth Thomas,Colin Charvis,Mark Taylor, Scott Quinnell, Rob Howley, Jonathan Humphreys,Scott Gibbs, Mike Hall, Ieuan Evans, Rob Jones, Paul Thorburn, Bob Norster, Bleddyn Bowen and Eddie Butler.
