Peter’s Food is putting its weight behind the Welsh rugby captain’s climb of Kilimanjaro next year by donating cash for every try scored by the Welsh team in the Invesco Perpetual Series at the Millennium Stadium this month and at the RBS Six Nations next year.

The company – one of the largest employers in Wales – decided to back the Captain’s Climb, which aims to raise £1million for Velindre Hospital’s Stepping Stones Appeal in Cardiff, after considering what charitable causes to support in 2010.

James Osgood, marketing director for Peter’s, said: "It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of Welsh rugby at Peter’s. We supply the Millennium Stadium and are already partners with Brains on our steak and ale pie.

“The Captain’s Climb is an inspirational idea. At Peter’s we like to do our bit for charity and the Captain’s Climb has all the ingredients of a truly worth cause.”

Peter’s involvement in the initiative came after James held talks with the man behind the fundraiser, rugby photographer Huw Evans. Huw came up with the idea of taking 15 Welsh rugby captains up Kilimanjaro after his wife, Sue, was diagnosed with non-smoking related lung cancer.

Huw said: “The support we are getting from Welsh businesses like Peter’s is phenomenal and I am confident with the support of the Welsh public too we can reach the £1m target.”

Peter’s will put £250 in the pot for every try scored by the Welsh team throughout the Invesco Perpetual Series games against New Zeland, Samoa, Argentina and Australia on consecutive weekends this November and RBS Six Nations in 2010.

James Osgood believes the money for tries initiative will be just one of many imaginative ways the business will be able to support the Captain’s Climb.

He added: “I think we’re going to see Peter’s heavily involved in this climb. Cancer affects so many lives that I can think of no better cause to support. It’s going to be a pleasure and a privilege to be a part of this £1m fundraiser.”
