Two global Executives join WRU Board

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has appointed two new independent non-executive directors, including the first woman, to join its Board for the first time in the history of the governing body.

The successful candidates, Aileen Richards and Tim Griffin, join the WRU Board from careers as leading executives for multi-national companies.

Aileen Richards is currently based in the USA as the Executive Vice President and Vice President of People and Organisation for Mars, Incorporated, the global petcare, chocolate, gum and confectionery and drinks business. She grew up outside Cardiff and holds a BSc Honours degree in business studies. She spent her 30-year career at Mars working across the management structure in a number of high profile roles in the UK, Belgium and USA.

Now retiring from her key role on the global leadership team of the thirty five billion dollar turnover company, Aileen is returning to London and this WRU appointment will be a key part of her future. She has a declared passion for Welsh rugby, is a debenture holder at the Millennium Stadium, and has a strong ambition to contribute to life in Wales.

Tim Griffin is chief executive officer of Dell UK, the global technology leader. His career has spanned senior management roles in a number of major companies including the PricewaterhouseCoopers, NCR, and the BBC. Before taking up his UK role, Griffin worked in Singapore and Australia in a variety of senior positions at Dell.

An MBA alumnus of the University of Wales College, Cardiff; Griffin has roots in Wales and is an avid rugby fan having played No 8 for Newbridge as well as serving as captain of Cross Keys and Monmouthshire U23’s. He also represented Cardiff, Wales and British Universities in the back row.

The new board appointments follow a decision at the last Annual General Meeting of the WRU to introduce a series of changes to the governance of the Union. This followed a review of the WRU’s existing governance structures, led by the eminent High Court Judge, Sir Robert Owen and assisted by a WRU governance steering group.

Aileen Richards and Tim Griffin were selected from a shortlist of individuals identified following an open appointment process. The new directors will add external business expertise combined with a passion for Welsh rugby to the existing 18 strong board of directors which consists of: 14 individuals elected from districts; three national directors and the group chief executive.

WRU Chairman, Gareth Davies, said: “The appointment of Aileen and Tim as independent non-executive directors is a landmark decision in the evolution and modernisation of our governance.

“They are both exceptionally qualified individuals with vast expertise and experience at the highest levels of industry. The appointment of Aileen as the first woman to sit on the Board of the WRU demonstrates that we are determined to modernise and become representative of our supporters in our corporate governance.

“She and Tim will bring a level of debate and insight to our Board deliberations which will help the WRU test all its decisions against the most vigorous commercial and ethical measures.

“We already have an excellent board of individuals who boast a deep understanding of the needs of Welsh rugby but this new dynamic we are now introducing will make us an even stronger collective.”

Aileen Richards said: “I am delighted to be the first woman to be appointed to the Board of the Welsh Rugby Union in its 134 year history. This non-executive role is the perfect conduit to focus my love of rugby, pride in being Welsh and desire to contribute to life in Wales.

“I am committed to making a difference around the Board table and it is equally gratifying to be joining the WRU at this exciting stage of its corporate development.”

Tim Griffin. added, “As a dedicated rugby player and supporter I am delighted and extremely proud to have been appointed as a non-executive director to the board of the Welsh Rugby Union.

“My international career spanning a variety of industries and serving every customer segment affords me the ability to provide insights across a host of challenges and look forward to engaging with my fellow directors as soon as possible.”

Ospreys half-price offer

Did you go to Judgement Day III at the weekend? Then you can watch the Ospreys in the huge PRO12 clash with Glasgow next week for half price!

As a thank you for the fantastic backing the team received at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, Ospreys Rugby are delighted to be able to offer this great deal to any supporter who presents their Judgement Day III ticket to the Liberty Stadium Ticket Office.

The deal allows you to purchase one standard ticket at the discounted rate for each Judgement Day III ticket presented at the Ticket Office, so you’ll pay just

£10 per adult, £5 per concession and £1 per child.

The Ospreys play Glasgow at the Liberty Stadium on Friday 8th May, KO 7.35pm. With two games remaining of the regular PRO12 season and both teams already confirmed for the play-offs, just four points separate Glasgow in top spot and the Ospreys in fourth, with a home semi-final up for grabs.

Suki Hayer, Ticket Sales Manager, said:

“We had great support in Cardiff at the weekend, with the Ospreys seemingly having the largest representation inside the stadium. It was fantastic to see, and with such a big game at the Liberty next week, we want to see as many of those as possible getting behind the cause again.

“A big crowd really can make a huge difference to the boys, so hopefully this offer can help to ensure that the Liberty is packed for what is building up to be a great game against Glasgow who are at the top of the league at the moment.”

Additional tickets can be purchased at the standard face value rate.

Discounted tickets for the Ospreys vs Glasgow match can only be redeemed in person via the Ticket Office.

Condy commits to Scarlets

Scarlets are pleased to confirm that Cross Keys number 8 Jack Condy has committed his future to West Wales and will join the Region ahead of the 2015-16 season.

19-year-old Condy has made a name for himself, in the Principality Premiership with Cross Keys, as a strong ball carrier with assured handling and finishing power scoring two tries against Carmarthen Quins at Carmarthen Park only a few weeks ago.

Number 8 Condy, from Penallta, made his debut for Cross Keys against fellow Dragons feeder club Bedwas in February 2014 and has gone on to make 23 appearances for the Gwent side, scoring four tries.

Condy captained Penallta to a Welsh Youth Cup title in 2013-14 before breaking into the senior game with Cross Keys.

Scarlets Head of Regional Development Gareth Jenkins said: “We’re delighted to confirm that Jack will be joining us for the new season. He is a raw talent who’s been making waves in the Premiership.

“Jack is a young lad, a big ball carrying 8, but he’s new to this level and we’re we are excited to see how he will develop within a professional environment and continue to grow as a player under the leadership of more experienced and mature players.”

Commenting on the news of joining Scarlets on a Development Contract Condy said: “I am really pleased to have signed a contract to join the Scarlets ahead of the 2015-16 season. It’s a great honour to join a club and Region with such a strong heritage as the Scarlets.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time with Cross Keys and would like to thank them for the last few seasons. Joining the Scarlets will give me an opportunity to continue my development as a player and it’s something I’m really looking forward to.”

Condy is the latest name to be added to Scarlets’ squad ahead of season 2015-16 alongside Glasgow and Canadian winger DTH van der Merwe, outside half Aled Thomas, tighthead prop Will Taylor from Wasps, lock Tom Price from Leicester Tigers and Welsh qualified loosehead prop Dylan Evans. Internationals Liam Williams, Ken Owens and Rob Evans as well as George Earle, Lewis Rawlins and Phil John have committed their futures to the Scarlets with Rhodri Jones, Samson Lee, Jake Ball and Scott Williams all also set for a bright future at the region on National Dual Contracts.

Ospreys Announce New Elite Youth Performance Manager

Ospreys Rugby have confirmed the appointment of Dan Griffiths to the role of Elite Youth Performance Manager.

33-year old Griffiths replaces Damian Karauna, who has left the Ospreys after seven years service having been offered the opportunity to return home to New Zealand as Skills Coach with the national sevens team.

He steps up to his new role having spent the last two years operating as a ‘C’ Group Coach on the Ospreys development pathway, working with aselection of carefully selected young players aged 16 to 18 who attend the Ospreys’ Llandarcy HQ between 7 and 9am daily for specific rugby and fitness work ahead of their normal college day. He has also worked closely with the three higher education colleges in Ospreylia, managing the region’s unique college development programme. Since February of this year, Griffiths has combined these duties with the role of Backs Coach at Bridgend Ravens, a role he will continue to fill.

The appointment sees the Ospreys again making significant additional investment over and above the WRU’s development infrastructure and Dan will be working under the watchful eye of Regional Performance Development Manager, Andrew Millward.

He now assumes responsibility for the hands-on development of the strategic direction for the Ospreys age-grade rugby teams, helping to ensure effective delivery of the respective programmes. In addition, he will continue to work with another Ospreys appointment, C Group coach Mefin Davies, and WRU skills coach Shaun Connor to assist with the delivery of technical and tactical development.

Speaking about his new role, Griffiths said:

“This is a great opportunity for me to continue my development as a coach and I’m really excited to be taking up the post. Since coming to the Ospreys I’ve been fortunate to work alongside some great coaches who have really helped me improve, and this is the next step for me.

“When you see how the likes of Steve Tandy and Damian Karauna, who have done this role previously, have developed and grown, you can see what a great opportunity it really is. With the support of everybody at the Ospreys, I’m looking forward to playing a bigger part on the player development pathway while using that experience to become a better coach myself.”

Originally from Carmarthen, Griffiths was a fly-half who spent seven years at Newport RFC, featuring on two occasions for the Dragons. In 187 Newport appearances he scored 1,551 points, an all time club record. In 2010 he moved to Bridgend where, under Tandy’s stewardship, he helped the Ravens to promotion back into the Premiership at the first attempt.

Ospreys Chief Operations Officer, Andrew Hore, said:

“The role of Elite Youth Performance Manager is a vital one within the unique Ospreys development structure, and any individual appointed to that role not only has to possess the right characteristics and skillset, they also have to be committed to development from within and continuous personal improvement. It is an influential role that has such an impact on young players coming through the development pathway, and as such, it’s important that we identify the right person.

“Dan has been a part of our development structure for over two years now, working with the likes of Steve and Damian who have held this post before him, and has not only a real understanding of the position, but he has displayed a real aptitude for development.

“We are delighted to be able to confirm Dan in this post and wish him the very best of luck as he continues to develop as a young coach. Development from within is at the heart of what we do, and with another talented young coach progressing along the pathway it is clear that we are living our values.”
